Scaling removes hardened calculus and plaque from the tooth surface and below the gumline using an ultrasonic scaler. At Tooth Point Dental Care it costs ৳1,000–2,000 and takes 30–45 minutes, usually completed in a single visit.
When you need it
When you need scaling
- Gums bleed when you brush
- Persistent bad breath
- Visible yellow or brown hardened deposits near the gumline
- Swollen gums or teeth beginning to loosen
- Staining from smoking or paan
Even with healthy gums, scaling once a year is recommended.
How it’s done
How it's done
An ultrasonic scaler vibrates the calculus loose — there’s no cutting and anaesthesia is usually unnecessary. The teeth are then polished so the surface is smooth and plaque re-accumulates more slowly. Heavy deposits below the gumline may need a second sitting.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about scaling
No. Calculus fills and hides existing gaps. Once it’s removed the gaps become visible, which many people mistake for damage caused by the cleaning. The gap was already there.
Usually not. If the gums are badly inflamed there can be some discomfort, and local anaesthesia can be given.
Tooth necks that were covered by calculus are suddenly exposed, causing sensitivity for a few days. It typically settles within 3–7 days; a desensitising toothpaste speeds this up.
Once a year, or every six months if you smoke or chew paan.
