Why Your Gums Bleed — Causes and What to Do

Blood every time you brush? It isn’t normal — but in most cases it’s straightforward to fix.

The most common cause of gums bleeding when you brush is gingivitis — inflammation caused by plaque and hardened calculus at the gumline. In most cases a single scaling appointment (৳1,000–2,000) plus correct brushing stops the bleeding within one to two weeks.

Causes of bleeding gums

Healthy gums don't bleed

Many people assume a little blood when brushing is normal. It isn’t. Healthy gums are pink, firm, and don’t bleed when brushed. Bleeding means there is inflammation.

The main cause: plaque and calculus

A soft sticky film — plaque — forms on teeth after eating. If it isn’t cleaned off properly it hardens into calculus within 24–72 hours. Calculus cannot be brushed away, and the bacteria on it keep the gum inflamed. The result is red, swollen gums that bleed easily.

Other causes

The biggest mistake

Because it bleeds, many people stop brushing that area. This is the worst possible response. Without brushing, more plaque accumulates, inflammation increases and the bleeding gets worse. The area needs to be cleaned gently, with a soft brush — not avoided.

What to do at home

When you first start brushing properly, bleeding may briefly increase. That is expected and should settle within one to two weeks.

When to see a dentist

If bleeding hasn’t reduced after two weeks of correct brushing, there is almost certainly calculus present — and only scaling removes it. Don’t delay if you also notice:

Gingivitis is completely reversible. Left untreated it becomes periodontitis, where the bone around the tooth is destroyed — and that bone does not grow back.

Yes — scaling is safe in pregnancy, and the second trimester is the most comfortable time for it. Tell your dentist you are pregnant before the appointment.

If the cause is only soft plaque, correct brushing can resolve it. Once hard calculus has formed it cannot be brushed off, and it will not resolve without scaling.
